Broken Render

Filed under: Robert Hoehne — Rex @ 05:02

I’m finding it difficult to create anything worthy of late, this is from way back in May for my sofobomo effort.

  1. Why worry about the date Robert – I live off stored images like a camel off its hump! This reminds me a little of a glacier calving lumps into the sea. After one gets over the strong and different textures of the materials a feeling of gloom about builders’ work techniques descends!

  2. In a bit of a slump myself. These things pass.

I like this. It reminds me of the HCB photo of playing children framed by a hole in a wall. In this case, there’s a sense of having broken through only to find another barrier. A fitting photo for a slump.

  3. Yo, slumpers…me too.

I find the rubble at the base both necessary to explain the rest of the photo and a visual irritation. Other than that I’m with John – vague feelings of ice and lots of sighs about building quality control.

  4. The rubble gives it depth as well as a bit of an explanation. I suppose it also tells us a bit about the history of the ‘Broken Render” as it hasn’t been cleaned up since it fell off!

  5. I really like the way the pattern and tones reverse on the wall — great textures. Works very well on several levels.

I think most of us have gone to “older” images sometimes — for me, there are times that these take on a new “life”, when they are processed a bit differently than the first time, or are newly “discovered”, having been set aside or rejected initially.

  6. thanks everyone. Still makes me feel vulnerable not having shot anything particularly interesting of late.

  7. I’m not in a slump per se but an enforced time of camera down time due to the long Tokyo summer heat. Looks like cooler weather from this weekend though…

The rubble makes this work for me and as Colin says, completes the shot. There’s plenty of contrasts at work here and (similar to my comments on Matt’s pipes) the rubble makes the wall seem very uniform. In Japan this would have been swept away but here you still have ‘flakes’ trying to fall off.
