Hat, Hair (05140017)

Filed under: Matt — Matt Alofs @ 13:03

  1. Two things have struck me since opening this: the first thought was that this looked very South-East Asian as the hat resembles conical ones there, along with the informal t-shirt; and secondly, that the style of photograph owes something to the fashion shoot (carefully blanked out background, for instance).

If we’re talking ‘iconic’, I suppose that this is about summing up how a woman looks. Along with that comes a great photo: the sweep of the hat echoing the top round the shoulders is neat.

  2. The splendidly rendered textures of the hat and the hair playing against one another is irresistable. As a bonus, the shape of the bare shoulders mirroring that of the automobile creates a nice sub-plot. I keep coming back for another look—just to enjoy it.

  3. It took me a while to see the shape in the background as a car, but once I did the whole image came together very well. Until then I was fighting against the backgound blur.

This has the air of a very expensive fashion photo.

Well, I had watched a documentary on Richard Avedon the night before ;-)

  5. The texture of the hat hits my eye immediately, it is almost 3D.

There are two echoes; the hat brim and neckline; Kate’s shoulders car. I like visual echoes.

  6. Charming. Although I, too, see a bit of fashion influence, it does not have the polished perfection of a magazine shot. Much more interesting this way.

  7. I don’t really see a fashion influence but then I rarely look at pictures of fashion so maybe I am wrong.
The line of hat and top are clever, shoulders and car also clever. The textures in the hat and hair hold my attention for a while as well.
All these things and a delightful narrow focus make me enjoy the picture.

  8. With car or without? Without Colin’s identification I don’t think I’d be that hung up about it but as I now know what it is it somewhat blots a very clean and exacting portrait. There is so much texture and geometry pfront that a vast whiteness in the background would have worked much better for me. Having said all that it is well seen and does add an interesting position for hat fashion photography.
