Hong Kong 18

  1. I’m nearly at the end of my pre-prepared HK series from last October. There is one more sitting in draft that I’m not quite sure is up to it. I’ve just started processing another batch from this April. It is immediately apparent looking back on these older ones how much technically better the images are (M8 versus digicam sized chip). As to the content, you’ll get an opportunity to comment over the coming weeks :-)

  2. Where is the andwich? Or is that the S of Structural Steel? This could almost be a stock photograph.

  3. Nice one Rex!

Without the litter, but keeping the S, this would be heading for nicely abstract or skirting constructivism. Does the litter turn it into social realism?!

There is a huge tension between the presence of litter and what otherwise would be an attractive picture.

I won’t condemn the green of the S!

  4. “…what otherwise would be an attractive picture…”. By which I mean a conventionally attractive picture becomes more complex – I think…

  5. Rex – I almost rejected the picture because of that stock look and feel. As is, the fact that it was at the end of the queue indicates that I’m ambivalent about it.

In retrospect I was left wondering whether there was a better picture in there trying to get out.

John – condemn all you will as it wasn’t *my* choice of colour. Nearly British Static Caravan Green. Nobody’s favourite :-)

  6. While there certainly is a lot going on, I am left feeling that I’ve been led around quite a bit and haven’t enough to show for it. I know it’s just my own sensibilities that are holding me back, but it is not a favorite of mine.

  7. Photographic sibilance. Post-modern Sesame Street?

  8. Maybe it could almost be a stock photo — but in my eyes it is not. Only the perfect letter “S” brings it into that realm at all. As John indicated — the litter takes it in a different direction.

Rex — I enjoyed your comment — it added to my enjoyment of the photo.

  9. For some reason, I keep hearing Number 8 when I look at this.

  10. A problem with the sandwich?

  11. I think I might of taken a picture like this myself but then would of sat on it wondering where it fits or what to do with it.

So where does this fit into Hong Kong 1-18? Construction, lots of it.

‘S’ for Sandwich, nice one Rex.

  12. Robert – I’m not sure that every photo has to “fit in”. Whilst a theme or a project might be a spur to action, once the photos are taken there is no necessity for each to be connected.

Also, the material here, whilst not uniquely HK, is definitely a part of the scene. The construction method implied by the metal and the type of ground beneath it would both be pretty unusual where I am now.
