Not my usual reasoned approach to picking a shot, this one’s been growing on me.



  1. That is certainly an interesting building and the planners have allowed it a bit of personal space around its base, albeit the whole seems modest.

    If your intention was to show the character of this ‘square’, then that has been achieved even if the one person there looks a bit lost and not ideally placed. Would a shot up through the canopy of the trees be possible?

    The darker of the two buildings behind it seems to have one window that looks like a lizard eye.

  2. I’m left unsure about what you are trying to show with this and your own comment suggests that you are getting something out of it that you didn’t expect.

    I do get a feeling of the character of the place, but there are nagging details along both the left and right hand edges that stop me enjoying this as a composition.

  3. I’m guessing the person walking off stage left may be a reason for picking this. But, similar to Colin, I find a lack of focus along the right edge to balance/contrast the interest along the left. I see nothing to be walking so fast away from. Slice about a fifth off the right side of this and I have much more to work with. Especially as it seems to emphasise more of the slope and then the person falling out of this. The vertical stairwell then becomes all key and forces you to look much deeper in to the scene and enjoy the architecture a little more.

  4. I struggled to see this on my first couple of viewings. Everything (the figure, white lines, arrows) seem to be driving me away from the subject. Eventually, I began to see that as the point of the image. I may be way off base with that, of course. But, it seems to me that the building holds everything together and once I accepted that, I enjoyed scene.

    I am burning with curiousity to know why you were orginally cool to the picture, but eventually warmed to it.

  5. Anita – it’s not so much I was cool to it so much as couldn’t explain it. I think I’m coming around to understanding my own reaction but that’ll have to wait.

  6. I find that this has been growing on me as well. What works: the slight tilt, the chipped paint of the biker’s lane turn arrow, that washed out area above the stop sign. It doesn’t seem like this should make a photo, but there’s something here.

  7. The shadow of the building and the sunshine either side helps with a sense of domination. The fact that the building goes out the top of the image makes it seem very very tall.

  8. It is not one of those immediately riveting photos, but I keep finding it worth returning to. I think Matt’s list of what works is right. And the foreground has for me whatever it is that is lacking in Martin’s Night Bus. I’m also seeing a kind of resonance in all the repeated rectangular shapes throughout. That person walking away is needed for scale.

  9. First off I wanted to be able to make more of the spiral staircase. Then I wanted to see more of the left hand side and less of the right.
    Now I want to see more of the shadows of the tree on the right.
    I’m with the folk who see more in this every time they look.
