  1. Cute.

Love it for the humour, everything feels good in life.

  2. I don’t get the same sensation about life as Robert: rather I see ‘Burt’ trying to turn away from this annoying intrusion!

There is an intriguing play on form here. At first one is taken up by the bulk of the foreground body on the bonnet (boot? – not sure if this is a VW) but then one is drilled back to the shadow of Burt, which provides a more definitive head than the real figure. Then one realises that all the action takes place in that small line of camera, shadow, model head, which has to carry all the rest of the photo, especially given the pov of the photographer and the relatively unflattering view of the vehicle.

The shadow taking a photo of a shadow is original enough to overcome (just) all the potential defects in form of the remainder.

  3. Shadowplay. It took me a while to see ‘Burt’ I have to admit, then it all dropped into place.

  4. This is so clever. The smile still comes after several viewings.

  5. Perhaps this needs the booted foot of a burly security guard in the top right – rushing to protect the celebrity from the dreaded paparazzi…

The photo probably works better if you understand all the cultural icons (which I only sort of do), but has enough appeal in a ‘why did he take that?’ sort of way to make me look hard.

  6. Brings an instant and repeated smile. I don’t think I need much more than that.

  7. Why is it that the older the car the bigger the steering lock?

I love the quirky humour of this.

  8. It makes sense that this is Bert. That still doesn’t stop me trying to find Ernie though – so in that respect it does may me look much deeper in to this. As a result I found the steering lock and begin to ask myself too ‘Why?’
