Sure is bright at no loss of detail in sky nor water. With all the action happening through a thinnish slice of the middle of the photograph that detail is crucial in order to make them parts of the whole rather than additions to the interest.
That bridge works as a wonderful catapult to launch the ‘interesting’ architecture in the expanse of water up front. That in itself gives this a rather comical edge for me and pretty much sums up where I’d prefer those buildings to be!
It’s interesting how the tint effects the tones on the post-modern buildings and almost gives colour.
The previous comments helped me with this as initially I didn’t appreciate it. But its presentation has grown on me.
I like Akikana’s comment: “pretty much sums up where I’d prefer those buildings to be!”, with which I would concur. How does the country produce a half-decent bridge and then build that housing – there?!
Is this a bit like the Pyramids and Cairo? If you look in the right direction you get an iconic image of the pyramids, in the other direction you get Cairo.
I’ve just looked on the web and there seem to be places to stand to get the pretty shot and then there are the other places…………….
Is this photographic evidence item one in the case against the architect?
All that said it still comes across as an iconic bridge.
The bridge is iconic and arriving at 730 on a sunny summer morning it’s a great place to be. This area has some very interesting buildings, but you don’t have to go too far to find something very different. As for the modern flats, they are not so iconic:)
The ‘pretty bridge picture seems to depend heavily on over saturated evening colour and ‘streetlights’. I’ll share a handheld balck and white evening shot sometime.
It’s an interesting angle but i’m not convinced that chopping off part of the bridge and the overlap is really working.
I don’t have a problem with the appartment block – seems like the sort of place I’d be interested in living, and knowing the redevelopment there, seems to fit.

The frame placement does tend to make this look more like an action shot than an architectural one (akikana’s catapult).
Playing with crops show that the expanse of water is critical to the effect that you’ve achieved.

Frames as it is, “The bridge that ate Newcastle” might work as an alternate title. A slightly unsettling photo that does grow on one.
