  1. You’re getting an interesting look there. Devoid of expressoin, but not of feeling. An older head with a small body?

    I think the processing may have left her face a bit too flat, but am not sure. Sometimes skin tones do odd things when rendered in black and white. Also, obviously needing to deal with the backlight doesn’t help!

  2. Each time I look at this I think of David Suchet the actor. However, that is pretty irrelevant to the photo!

    I am very happy with the processing of the face: it seems to suit the type of photo it is. One certainly needs the woman between and behind them to help with balance, although I’m not sure that is the right word. If I have any reservation it is about having the RHS as blank space in effect – even if it reminds me of someone. The success of the picture depends on the relationship of the girl with the figure carrying her: it is pretty obvious that the person is her father so her expression must be in response to being photographed, whether that connects in her head to being carried or she has become a being independent of being carried remains unknown.

    I think I’ll settle for a priceless expression rendered in a way that suits the occasion.

  3. Agree with the comments made by Mike and John. To me, the feeling of the photo is one which could date back to the 50s or 60s. BW film and wet print. Spent the past 50 years in somebody’s photo album. Perhaps there is a date and/or name at the back of it written with a pencil. The flare and loss of highlight detail gives the impression that this could have been taken with an instamatic camera of that era. Anyway, I can’t focus on anything but the eyes and the face of the girl, it is an attention magnet. Perhaps due to the sense of mystery it evokes in me.

  4. A family picture or a bit of reportage but not a camera club picture. It doesn’t comply with one of the many rules espoused by club judges.

    However for me its beauty is in the gaze and the link with dad.

  5. thank you Rex, you brought a smile to my face. It seems to be something I do, upset camera club judges. Like the judge that said a digital photo should never have a tilted horizon.

    Some light modelling in the face would have been nice, agreed.

  6. I have given talks at the club about composition and ‘rules’ and use a number of iconic photographs to poke fun at the ‘rules’. One I love for non vertical verticals (there is no horizon in the image) is Garry Winogrand’s ‘Austin Texas 1974’ where its skewness is part of the composition. It all comes down to the judge trying to decide if the author intended the effect or was it accidental. Whereas the judge should be looking at the result. I do advise beginners to make sure that an effect is sufficiently obvious not to be a defect. ie make it look like that’s what you intended.

    All that said, the engineer in me does win on vertical verticals a lot of the time!

  7. I thought of another which I have shown to the club and said that if a new member produced THIS there would be a temptation to talk to them about distracting blown out skies and how to pan correctly. Whereas if you ignore the rules then the picture speaks volumes.
