Into the deep

Into the deep, Borneo, October 2011

About 1m under the surface & 600m below me.

  1. This made me chuckle. As a minimalist picture I think this wins the gold medal! I wondered if the shadows were the the equivalent of a marine Brocken spectre? Do you always get similar light patterns when diving into water this clear, in daylight?

  2. It is interesting that you get this effect at only 1m down as one imagines it to have been taken somewhere more like 5m or more. It is also intriguing that the point source appears to be darker. Whatever, it is the sort of picture for printing large and staring at in order to relax.

Next time can we have one from 200m?!

  3. I asumed we are looking down over “into the deep”. The convergence, into the dark spot, perhaps gives some sense of said depth.

    • … “assumed” even!

  4. Minimalist is certainly right. It surprises me just how much I’m drawn in. I wonder how much the title affects that — would it be the same if it were untitled and I did not associate it with water? I’m guessing, yes.

  5. I would love to see this printed huge on a wall so that we can also see the tiny particles and imperfections in the water. Then sit across and observe.

  6. smart phone background? simple and captivating, only one of those words describes me but both work on this picture.
