The Outsider?

  1. I’m interested in what your comments might be, especially as you might consider the question has already been answered.

Mmm, I’ve just noticed something – do I need to get rid of the highlights on the hair of that person at the back of the room?

  2. Don’t people take their hats off indoors anymore?! He certainly gives the impression at this stage of not being part of that group and it is interesting that he did fall in with them – perhaps he knew them. Your positioning is good for being able to pose him as an outsider except for the person appearing on top of the head of the man in the group of two. There is nothing wrong with the highlight in the hair but the head is a bit of a pimple! But overall, the cleanliness of the image and detail and tonal rendering is excellent. It’s also an enjoyable shot for describing the room and giving more of a hint of what the ‘party’ is about.

    • I much appreciate your comments John, please see my comments about the pimple below.

  3. I think I probably would tone down the pimple as once seen it needs mind bleach to lose it! :-)

There is something about the B&W tones that really bring this to life.

Perhaps using Mike’s diptych as an example your two would make a good pair, a before and after?

    • Yes it does need “mind bleach” Rex and I certainly wouldn’t leave it like this as the finished article, but I will leave it like this so as not to spoil the discussion. Future viewers wouldn’t understand what we were talking about if I made an attempt to correct it.

That said, perhaps I’ll test out my idea as to how to solve it and then overwrite this version with the result (whatever it is) but include a small copy of this with it for comparison. Is it ok to do this?

  4. Several thoughts here:

The hat, as much as the positioning, marks his card. It makes an interesting contrast with the pair sitting on the right – I like the intent listener and the suggestion of long term friendship therein.

The ‘pimple’ is the head, not the light. Not sure if it would be an issue in a print or not, as I’m often easier on these things than others.

Did you use flash? The foreground seems quite bright and the depth of field high. I’d darken the hat and back at least.

    • Well yes Mike the head is the pimple, but my point is “would you notice it without the highlight”? That is, wouldn’t it just disappear into the shadows like the other two people back there?

Yes you’re right about the flash, I did use one (bounced off the ceiling) but I have already darkened the hat, his upper back and the whole bit of the foreground (the back of the seat) that he is leaning on.

      Thanks for commenting.

  5. The mystery here is slightly spoilt by having seen the latter shot first. But certainly, the idea of an interested onlooker is well captured. i also get a very cinematic feeling from the view-point taken here: part of the scene rather than observer of it.
