  1. Outer darkness. A creature dressed in a Christmas pantomime costume walking on a lunar landscape. This is a photo that offers a viewer many routes for imagination to follow. I’m sure that as a natural history shot it is very good – as a photo it transcends that.

  2. I like the hint of green in the background, it helps create the environment. I’m not a fan of flash images where the flash separates the subject from everything else. It does look as though it is carrying a lawn on its back!

  3. John, thanks for the comment. It is one of my challenges to make these underwater shots a bit more than pure natural history.

    Rex, separation from the background here caused by ambient light: there was none as this was a night dive. I agree with you in general, though, about complete background separation. During the day, I look to have just enough background from this sort of shot to create the environment even if in dark tones.
