Mystery Man (At the Circus) – a cheeky second post of the day

  1. Not Carlo then?! He looks like a bullfighter but most circuses don’t have bulls! It’s a strange photo with its blank wall and some shadows that don’t seem to have a logical source. The mystery certainly heightens the question-asking.

  2. Very stark, simple in composition but leaving lots of unanswered questions. Thought provoking.

  3. The background is a parachute. There were no animals, but it was a good evening out. I’ve never been to a circus and the girls thoroughly enjoyed. The whole had a very preiod feel, from ‘Ariel Beauty’ through the clown and to the jugglers, balance and trapeze artists.

  4. Very interesting. It continues to grow on me!

  5. Well I felt a very strong appeal from this right from first viewing it, which is I guess a lot to do with the mystery and ambiguity. But of course there’s the very high contrast, which I also like in this instance.
I think perhaps the duck like markings on his back help to allow the otherwise very dark area of his back to work. I also find the horizontal band of shadow across the bottom useful for some reason. Is it a childlike need to have an object grounded at the bottom and not simply appear across the sky?

A lot of the ambiguity is in the background. Parts of it look cloudlike but elsewhere this is clearly contradicted. Influenced no doubt by the title, I was thinking tent canvas, but why would he be standing so close?

There was something about his posture (what little we can see of it) and possibly combined with that horizontal shadow, reminded me of somebody praying from a seated position in a church pew.

As Rex says “very thought provoking”.

You can have as many 2nd posts as you like for me, if they’re as good as I find this one!
